By popular demand! This is my most-requested workshop topic.
If you’ve ever wondered how to add bold layers of color to your ceramics, look no further! In this two hour video workshop, I will show you how I underglaze a plate and a mug from start to finish using multiple layers of paper resists.
In this workshop, I discuss…
…my strategies for choosing what colors to use.
…how I consider the form of the pots while composing a dynamic surface.
…how to paint subtle shifts between colors across a bone dry surface.
… my approach to removing or masking mistakes during the painting process.
… my favorite tools for painting and touching up stenciled surfaces.

Underglaze Painting

Hi! I’m Taylor. I’ll be your instructor.
I’ve been making pots since I first took a ceramics class in 2013. After five years of atmospheric firing and a little tendonitis, I switched to cone 6 electric firing in graduate school. I started adding layers of texture and color to my work, chasing surfaces with a sense of richness and depth. I’ve been layering decoration techniques on pots for thousands of hours ever since!
I’m excited to teach you all I know about underglaze layering through the video workshop and the FAQ section I’ve written to accompany this course. Subscribers will also receive my clay body and glaze recipe PDF to download.

If you plan to watch and pause the workshop while you follow along, I recommend having the following ready to go:
Bone dry pieces to paint on (basic slab tile recommended for initially practicing)
Enough newsprint stencils to cover the painting area several times over, cut in advance (stick with simple shapes while you’re learning)
Underglazes (at least 6 total, 2 light, 2 medium, and 2 saturated/dark colors. I use Amaco Velvets.)
1-2” wide hake brushes (preferred, but other brushes can work)
Xiem tools Korean atelier flat hook blade
1 - 1.5 mm stylus tool
Large sponge
Bucket of water
Many of these tools and more can be found at my Amazon Storefront.

You can use this underglaze layering method over different clay bodies. However, if you’re looking to keep the underglazes as bright and true to their advertised color as possible, then I recommend porcelain or white stoneware. I recommend you practice on tile and test the clay body, underglaze(s), and glaze(s) you’re interested in before applying this to more intricate work.

I discuss my glazing process minimally in this workshop, but I’m happy to discuss any questions you may have. Email me at taylorsijan@gmail.com.

I recommend signing up for my newsletter at the bottom of this website for updates about upcoming in person workshops. If I have any upcoming workshops with dates set you can find those on my Events page.
